Asics Gel DS Racer 8

Here we go with the first running shoe review, the Asics Gel DS Racer 8. I purchased this shoe originally as a marathon race shoe but it quickly became an every distance favorite after my first win in a local 5k. The 5k was about 2.2 miles uphill, .2 flat and .7 downhill. The downhill was severe and I thought this shoe gave me the heal support that would save my knees from slapping pavement on a 45 degree decline. Typically, I race 5k's in Asics Hyperspeed's for their superb response and light weight. With a marathon coming up and the injuries setting in from running 160 miles/month, the goal was ultimately to get in some speedwork in from the race.  I wanted to still come away fresh which is why I ultimately decided to race in something light (the DS Racer is at 7.9 oz), but also with support. The DS Racer has a nice heel grab. You can let loose and not feel that you might come out of your shoe. One thing I believe could improve on the shoe is some padding under the tongue. This shoe will make those susceptible to lace bite a bit nervous. At the starting line of the Montgomery Half Marathon this year, I must have retied this shoe 20 times trying to get it perfect. Even though the heel strike provides support, it isn't as cushy as some of the everyday trainers. For this reason alone, it is recommended mostly for racing. The look is great, the price is right and it is likely a 200 mile shoe. I recommend the Asics Gel DS Racer 8 and give it a 9 of 10 for half marathon-marathon. I give it a 7 of 10 for 5k-10k. Again, if you have a 5k or 10k that has severe elevation changes, this might be the perfect race day shoe for you.
